Dr. Uwe Franke

 

After having studied chemistry, Dr. Uwe Franke joined BP in 1979. Until 1985 he worked for BP Chemicals and for Erdölchemie GmbH, the 50/50 petrochemical JV between Bayer and BP.  

 

In 1986 he moved to London's head office where he worked in a variety of jobs in refining (advisor for Africa and the Middle East) and the retail business (USA and continental Europe, Head of global network development unit)

 

In 1990 he took over the responsibility for the development of the retail station network in Europe with direct accountability for West Germany and the development of Eastern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden. During this time he led a consortium of 5 oil-companies bidding for Minol, the East German National Oil Company.    

 

In 1992 he was appointed manager of the B to B business, i.e. of BP’s heating oil and wholesale business in Europe. In 1994 Dr. Franke was appointed CEO of BP Portugal. End of 1996 he then joined the Management Board of Deutsche BP. In 1998 Dr. Franke became Leader of BP's Retail Stations Business Unit covering Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In 1999  he further was appointed the CEO/Head of Country of Deutsche BP in Hamburg.

 

After the merger of BP/Veba/Aral in 2001 he became Business Unit Leader for Retail Germany and Luxemburg, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Deutsche BP AG, Chairman of the Board of Aral AG and Managing Director of BP Oil Marketing GmbH. In 2004 he again took over as CEO of Deutsche BP AG. From May 2008 to June 2010 he was Chairman of the Executive Board of Mineralölwirtschaftsverband e.V., the German National Oil Industry Association.

 

After the formation of BP Europa SE (Societas Europeia) in May 2010, Dr. Franke became CEO of BP Europa SE. Dr. Franke retired from BP on 30th April 2012.

 

Dr. Franke has further played a role in many associations and organisations at the interface between business and politics. Examples are: Board of the German Industry Association BDI, Board of the German Transport Forum DVF, Board of the Eastern Committee of the German Industry, Steering Committee of the Energy Commission, Advisory Council to the Government, the German-Russian Forum, the German-British Königswinter Conference etc. He also founded the Diversity Charta in Germany under the sponsorship of Chancellor Merkel and was appointed German Ambassador for diversity.

 

Dr. Franke is a non-executive Director of BP Europa SE, Hoyer GmbH, Basalt AG, Biométhodes S.A. and Cash Payment Solutions GmbH.  He advises IFM Industry Funds Management as Senior Advisor as well as Pflüger International Consulting as Senior Advisor Energy. He is Chairman of the German Advisory Board of Alexander Proudfoot Consulting. Furthermore he has joined Bernotat+Cie GmbH as Mentor for Senior Executives.

 

Dr. Franke has also been elected President of the World Energy Council Germany with effect from 1st January 2014.
